The 27 Moons Project: Jyeshta Nakshatra
...the key to understanding your mind and the mind of others
In Vedic astrology, the moon is divided into 27 divisions called Nakshatra. The moon is our mind and therefore how we filter all thoughts, impressions and experiences. Knowing our Moon Nakshatra and the Nakshatras of others is key to understanding and appreciating how we think and approach the world. If you don’t know your Nakshatra, you can find out what it is here.
Happy Moon Monday!
For the next half a year, I’ll be writing a post about the current Nakshatra of the moon every Monday, the day naturally ruled by the moon.
If you don’t know what Nakshatra are, check out this post first.
For now, let’s dive into the Nakshatra the moon is currently in this lovely Monday.
This Monday’s Nakshatra: Jyeshta
Jyestha is the eighteenth Nakshatra (lunar mansion) in the Vedic lunar zodiac, spanning from 16°40' to 30°00' in the sign of Scorpio and is lorded by Mercury.
The term "Jyestha" translates to "The Eldest" or "The Senior," emphasizing its mature and authoritative characteristics. Jyestha Nakshatra is believed to bring a sense of responsibility, leadership qualities, and a natural inclination towards being in charge.
In Sanskrit transliteration, Jyestha is written as Jyeṣṭḥā. The word is pronounced as Jeye-shh-tuh.
Let’s look at what kind of mind natives with their moon in Jyestha have by examining this Nakshatra’s symbols, deity and general key words.
Symbols
Each Nakshatra has several symbols that can help you visualize their deeper meaning.
The symbol associated with Jyestha Nakshatra is an umbrella, circular amulet or earring. This symbolizes protection and represents the essence of Jyestha being the eldest or senior, emphasizing a role of guardianship and responsibility.
In fact, each of these symbols had the significance of royalty in the ancient world. Imagine the king or queen, wearing gold jewelry dripping with gemstones, with servants holding up an umbrella to shield their faces from the sun. This is an important aspect of Jyestha, a Nakshatra that tends to expect others to show allegiance and respect.
A circle is also contained and, in a sense, controlled. “Control” is also a major aspect of this Nakshatra. Although they give the air of a self-confident, capable person who is very much in charge, inside they can have difficulties facing life’s challenges and may find themselves wishing someone could come to their aid and rescue them.
Ruling deity
When it comes to Nakshatras, knowing the ruling deity gets you closer to understanding their inner nature than the sign they are in.
The ruling deity of Jyestha nakshatra is Lord Indra, the king of the heavens and a prominent figure in Hindu mythology. Jyestha is associated with qualities such as power, authority, and leadership, and Lord Indra epitomizes these characteristics.
Lord Indra is revered as the ruler of the gods and the lord of rain and thunderstorms. He is often depicted riding the celestial elephant Airavata and wielding the thunderbolt, known as Vajra, symbolizing his mighty power. As the leader of the divine forces, Lord Indra is responsible for maintaining order in the cosmos and ensuring the balance of dharma.
Individuals born under the influence of Jyestha nakshatra are believed to embody the qualities of Lord Indra. They may possess natural leadership abilities, a strong sense of authority, and a determined and ambitious nature. Like their ruling deity, those with their moon in Jyestha may be driven to achieve success and excel in their endeavors.
Just as Lord Indra is venerated for his strength and valor, natives of Jyestha nakshatra may find success in fields that require courage, assertiveness, and a strategic mindset. Additionally, they may exhibit a sense of responsibility and a willingness to take on challenges to uphold righteousness.
Lord Indra is also a very lusty deity, a trait that got him into trouble. Similarly, Jyestha Nakshatra natives tend to have a strong libido – and need to be careful to keep it in check, as extramarital or messy love affairs could potentially ruin their reputation.
Skills and interests
Individuals with their Moon in Jyestha Nakshatra exhibit a compelling mix of positive and negative traits.
On the positive side, they are natural-born leaders with an inherent determination, making them capable of overcoming challenges. Their charismatic presence often places them in influential roles, and their independent spirit allows them to rely on their own abilities. At the same time, they tend to make all their secrets public, even though they may have a naturally guarded and secretive nature. Although they like to be in charge, they sometimes find it difficult to achieve peace of mind until they’ve shared their inner thoughts and emotions with others.
Jyestha natives possess significant poise and strength; however, this strength can sometimes morph into authoritarian tendencies, and a desire for control that may lead to conflicts. While competitiveness fuels their success, an excessive need to compete may strain interpersonal connections. Additionally, their stubbornness and resistance to change can hinder adaptability, potentially impacting their personal and professional growth.
Last but certainly not least, Jyestha natives are often skilled in creative and innovative design and are talented musicians. They are driven to make a positive impact and are often drawn to occult subjects.
