The 27 Moons Project: Uttarbhadra Nakshatra
...the key to understanding your mind and the minds of others.
In Vedic astrology, the moon is divided into 27 divisions called Nakshatra. The moon is our mind and therefore how we filter all thoughts, impressions and experiences. Knowing our Moon Nakshatra and the Nakshatras of others is key to understanding and appreciating how we think and approach the world. If you don’t know your Nakshatra, you can find out what it is here.
Happy Moon Monday!
For the next half a year, I’ll be writing a post about the current Nakshatra of the moon every Monday, the day naturally ruled by the moon.
If you don’t know what Nakshatra are, check out this post first.
For now, let’s dive into the Nakshatra the moon is currently in this lovely Monday.
This Monday’s Nakshatra: Uttarbhadra
Uttarbhadra is the twenty-sixth Nakshatra (lunar mansion) in the Vedic lunar zodiac, spanning from 3°20' to 16°40' in the sign of Pisces and is lorded by Saturn.
The term "Uttarbhadra" translates to "The Latter Blessed One," highlighting its association with enduring wisdom and auspiciousness. Uttarbhadra Nakshatra is believed to bestow an adaptable nature that is nevertheless difficult to understand.
In Sanskrit transliteration, Uttarbhadra is written as Uttara Bhādrapadā. The word is pronounced as Uttara Bhā-dra-pa-da. It is composed of the twin constellations of Pegasus and Andromeda.
Let's explore the characteristics of Uttarbhadra by delving into its symbols, deity, and general keywords to gain insights into the mindset of individuals with their moon in this Nakshatra.
Symbols
Each Nakshatra has several symbols that can help you visualize their deeper meaning.
The symbols associated with Uttarbhadra Nakshatra are twins, the back legs on a funeral cot and a snake in the water.
The twins symbol was mentioned above, so let’s move on to the funeral cot.
An Indian funeral cot is a wooden structure designed to carry the deceased during Hindu funeral rites. Typically adorned and draped in white cloth, it symbolizes the final journey to the cremation ground.
This image could symbolize the quest for knowledge beyond the realms of death. Natives who have their moon in this Nakshatra often are drawn to and adept at secret knowledge or any subject that deals with that which is hidden or unseen.
We’ll explore the snake in the water image below.
Ruling deity
When it comes to Nakshatras, knowing the ruling deity gets you closer to understanding their inner nature than the sign they are in.
The ruling deity for Uttarbhadra Nakshatra is Ahirbudhnya, also known as Ahirbudhnyeshwara or the Serpent of the Deep. Ahirbudhnya is a form of Lord Shiva associated with the cosmic ocean.
This serpent god of the depths speaks to an attraction to occult sciences mentioned above. It also brings up the image of Kundalini, the coiled serpent that has the power to unleash the potential of the abstract mind.
Imagine a silvery serpent dwelling deep in the cool depths of the cosmic ocean. What do you imagine they would be like in terms of speed?
Slow, yet steady and enduring, yet sometimes nearly unmoving.
So also in the Uttarbharapda native, who takes their time in what they do and do not like to be rushed.
Skills and interests
Uttarbhadra are often hands-on people. Although scholarly in their own way, they tend to value experience over book learning, which can sometimes cause difficulties in school.
Their calm and understanding nature make them ideal mediators between opposing parties. They have a balanced nature and can work well with people from all walks of life. That said, they are often firm in their opinions. Although solitary in nature, once they’re your friend, they’re your friend for life.
The same goes for their enemies.
The Uttarbhadra native is often good with numbers and any mathematical subject. When combined with their interest in occult knowledge, this can mean skills and interest in such subjects as Jyotish (Vedic astrology), numerology and Kabbalah.
